Australian scientists have confirmed the existence of a clear link between diseased gums and heart disease, demonstrating that adequate therapy reduces the risk of embolism, leading to heart attacks and strokes. Researchers the hospital and the hospital dental Royal North Shore of Sydney, in collaboration with the University of Oslo, studied 67 cases of adults whose gums were so poor condition requiring the removal of all teeth. Scholars have conducted blood tests before treatment and again three months later, and found a reduction of risk factors for embolism and signs of inflammation, suggesting a significant decrease in the likelihood of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Levels of improvement were higher among non-smokers from smokers. The trial, led the dentist Barbara Taylor and cardiologist Geoffrey Taylor, who is described in the last issue of the Journal of Dental Research “and is the first to use a therapeutic intervention model for studying the link between gum disease and cardiovascular risk. The previous research was largely based on observations. Previous studies, the authors explain, had reported that people with poor dental health were also in poor condition in terms of cardiovascular, but they could not rule out other factors can make a person more susceptible to both diseases, such as stress, smoking , poverty and therefore less access to treatment. Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease – explained Taylor – is as simple as improving the daily care of teeth and gums, as well as quit smoking. “The important thing,” he said, “is clean your teeth, twice or even once a day, but it must be a thorough cleaning with a soft toothbrush and using dental floss.” According to the researchers, the experiment confirms the current medical opinion, that atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disorder. “The new research indicates that inflammation in the mouth has a measurable effect in the blood stream, and then the rest of the” observed. Scholars have started now a new trial to determine whether people with less serious ailments to the gums, which does not require the extraction of teeth, they can get benefits for the heart through treatment and education on how to prevent problems with gums. The diseases of the gums are the most common chronic infection in the world, affecting more than half of the population. The symptoms include inflamed or bleeding gums, bad breath, swollen gums and teeth that end up falling.
